Brendan Costello

Costello led San Clemente to their league title and their first since 1999. He was named MVP and earned first-team All-CIF South Coast honors for his play. The Tritons finished 7-5 as Costello completed 167-of-264 passing for 2,328-yards with 22 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also ran for 658-yards on 108 carries and scored nine rushing touchdowns. As a junior, he completed 168-of-262 passes for 2,132-yards with 23 touchdowns and just two interceptions. In the 2017 season he ran for 392-yards and five touchdowns on 99 carries. His sophomore season he completed 18-of-37 passing attempts for 198-yards with two touchdowns and no picks. He ran for 115-yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. His career total offense is 5,823-yards and 62 touchdowns responsible for. Costello led the Tritons to 16 wins during his two seasons as the starting quarterback, including a 9-2 record in 2017 He was named first team All-South Coast in 2017 and 2018. He was named San Clemente HS Scholar Athlete of the year in 2017 and 2018 and National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete in 2018. Costello was on the Superintendent/Principal Honor Roll in 2017 and 2018

Scouting Report: Let’s start with fun to watch because he makes a lot of plays and rarely is flat or at a loss to find something. He follows in the tradition of good deep throwers for Yurcich as he can throw the deep ball down the middle or on the sidelines well. He rarely misses on intermediate or deep throws short. If he misses, he is going to be long which allows receivers to know they are going to extend to or chase down the ball. On the out route he is often high, same with middle short to intermediate. His long throws are more ropes than floaters, in other words look more like Taylor Cornelius that Mason Rudolph. His release is quick, which allows him to release the ball in a slot between ¾ and over the top. The ball does drop a little low, but he brings it so quick it never mattered. He will sometimes drop between ¾ and side when throwing on the run. He has more short throws when throwing on the run, but that is the same with most quarterbacks. Once he scrambles, it is 80 percent he is going to end up running and he has good instincts. He doesn’t run away from people but avoids them and has good moves. I saw him hurdle twice and that is impressive. You can tell by the way he plays that he has some “it’. His height did not ever bother him in the three games I watched, and I watched the playoff loss where they were pounded good by St. John Bosco. He got frustrated but who wouldn’t. He was running for his skin the whole game.
