Transfer Scouting Report
Evaluated 04/02/2024
The back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year was on the NBA radar as a sophomore, but he opted to return to Drake for his junior season under his father, Darian DeVries. The father-son duo then led the Bulldogs back to the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season, despite picking up ten new players since their first run. Now, they are headed together to West Virginia.
Tucker DeVries is an elite shooter. He has converted 36% of his 3-point attempts this year, but that number is misleading given that he was the focal point of every opposing scouting report every time he took the floor. He can make all different types of shots off of various actions, thus unlocking his father’s playbook. He’s also a deceptively capable 3-level scoring threat as he gets 35% of his shots at the rim, according to Pivot Analysis, and then finishes at a rate of 59%. At 6-foot-7, he also has the positional size to score over top of contesting defenders in the mid-range area and he rates is in the 90th percentile when shooting jumpers off the dribble, according to Synergy Sports. Finally, he's a good passer who understands how leverage his own gravity to get others shots. It's the overlap of his shot-making, passing, and the various spots on the floor he can be effective from, that make him such a tough cover.
Defensively, he isn't especially quick laterally, but he had the size to be able to guard opposing fours most nights in the MVC. It remains to be seen if that's the case in the Big 12, but he's nonetheless still heady with good awareness on both ends of the floor and also a good rebounder with 6.8/game.
