A four-star recruit according to the 247Sports Composite, Barker was one of the crown jewels in Kentucky's 2014 recruiting class, the highest ranked class in program history. Barker played a key role in keeping the highly touted class together despite a 2-10 season on the field in the first year of the Mark Stoops Era before enrolling at Kentucky a semester early to participate in spring practice and compete for the starting quarterback job as a freshman. Barker was a second-team All-American selection by 247Sports and a 2014 Army All-American Bowl selection in high school. He was also invited to "The Opening," an all-star summer prospect camp held on the Nike Campus. After losing the starting job in fall camp, Barker redshirted during the 2014 season.
