The first significant recruiting win of the Mark Stoops era, Smith signed with Kentucky as a four-star junior college transfer. He joined defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh in coming to Lexington from East Mississippi Community College. Smith started all 24 games in his Kentucky career, finishing his time as a Wildcat with 120 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks.
